Last weekend I took Anna and a few of the girls from her troop to a Science Workshop hosted by the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Illinois. The activities were great and perfect for this age group. In the morning we learned about being an inventor and brainstormed things that are kind of annoying in our daily lives and how we could fix them in creative ways. The girls got to do a hands-on example by trying to water a plant using only the materials they were given. It was things like tubes, sponges, balloons, and straws. They did a really good job!
In the afternoon, the focus was on being a home scientist. So the girls got to do four different "experiments" with things you can find in your own home. This was one of the favorites: making ice cream! Unfortunately the bags we were using didn't seal very well and some of the salt leaked into the ice cream. But we're excited to try it again at home.
This was the other favorite activity of the day. The girls learned about how to create a rocket by causing a chemical reaction inside a film canister. We knew Norah and Joel would like this one too, so we had to buy a box of alka-seltzer to try it again at home.
